Electric Fence

Wall-top and free-standing electric fences with proper earthing, alarms and genuine energizers, installed and tested by one accountable team.

A wall on its own rarely stops a determined intruder. Many homeowners and landlords in Kenya learn this after a break-in, or after discovering that the electric fence they paid for has not shocked anyone in months. The usual causes are poor earthing, low-grade energizers, sagging wires touching plants and no alarm to warn anyone when a wire is cut.

Nerpax Systems does electric fence installation properly from day one. We survey your perimeter and check the wall condition, soil and power supply, then recommend the right fence type, strand count and energizer for your property. We supply genuine equipment, fit brackets, insulators and wire neatly, build a proper earth system, connect the siren and alarm, and commission every zone with a voltage test.

At handover we show you how to read the energizer, arm and disarm it, and what to check each month so the fence keeps working when it matters. If you already have a fence that has gone quiet, we repair and upgrade existing installations too, whoever put them up.

From a single home to a school, warehouse or farm, one team takes the job from site survey to handover, with clear warning signage and safe, tested work throughout.

Why choose us

One team from survey to handover

The same team surveys, supplies, installs and commissions your fence, so there is one point of contact and no blame shifting between suppliers.

Earthing done right

Most fences that fail to shock have a weak earth. We install a proper earth system for your soil conditions and test it before handover.

Genuine energizers and hardware

We supply genuine energizers, insulators, high-tensile wire and brackets, not low-grade parts that corrode or crack within a few seasons.

Safe, neat and clearly signed

Wires are tensioned evenly, routed away from vegetation and fitted with warning signs, with installations following applicable safety standards.

Repairs on existing fences

We diagnose and fix fences installed by others, from dead zones and short circuits to faulty energizers and broken alarms.

Materials available to buy

Contractors and DIY buyers can order energizers, wire, insulators and accessories through our online shop, with delivery across our service counties.

Types of electric fence installation in Kenya

The right fence depends on your boundary, your budget and what you are protecting. During the site survey we look at the full perimeter and recommend one of these options, or a mix.

Wall-top electric fence

The most common choice for homes, apartments and commercial plots with a perimeter wall. Steel brackets are fixed on top of the wall and carry four to eight strands of wire. It adds height and a strong deterrent without taking up space in the compound.

Free-standing electric fence

Used where there is no wall, such as farms, large compounds, warehouses and institutions. Posts are set in the ground and carry the wires at full height. It can stand alone or run alongside chain link or a live hedge.

Razor wire combined with electric fence

Razor wire adds a physical barrier, while the electric fence adds shock and an alarm. Combined correctly, with safe clearance between the two, they give layered protection for high-risk properties.

Choosing the energizer and alarm

The energizer is the heart of the fence. It should be sized for the total length of wire and the number of zones, and it should meet recognised energizer safety standards. Cheap units often lose voltage over long runs, especially in wet weather. We also recommend:

  • A loud siren that sounds when the fence is cut or shorted
  • A GSM module that sends alerts to your phone
  • A battery backup so the fence stays live during power cuts
  • Lightning diverters in exposed or high-ground areas

What affects electric fence cost

Every quote is based on your site, but these factors drive the price:

  • Perimeter length in metres, and the number of strands
  • Wall-top versus free-standing construction
  • Energizer capacity, siren, GSM and battery backup
  • Number of gates, corners and zones
  • Soil type and the earthing work required
  • Repairs needed to the wall before installation

As an indicative 2026 guide, a wall-top fence for a typical residential plot often falls between KES 60,000 and 180,000, while larger free-standing perimeters are priced per metre and can run well beyond that. Repairs and servicing are quoted after diagnosis. All figures depend on site; confirm with a free site survey.

Who it is for

  • Homeowners who want a strong deterrent without changing the look of the compound
  • Landlords and apartment owners protecting tenants, vehicles and shared parking
  • Businesses and warehouses securing stock and yards after hours
  • Schools, churches and clinics that need perimeter security with clear safety signage
  • Farms keeping out intruders and stray animals

Safety, earthing and warning signs

A well-installed electric fence delivers a short, sharp pulse that deters without causing lasting harm. That depends on a compliant energizer, correct earthing and proper insulation. We fit warning signs at regular intervals along the fence, keep wires clear of walkways and gates where people pass, and test every zone before handover. Installations should always follow applicable safety standards.

Maintenance and aftercare

Fences fail slowly: grass and branches touch a wire, an insulator cracks, an earth rod dries out. Check the energizer reading weekly and cut back vegetation regularly. We offer routine servicing that covers voltage testing on each zone, tension checks, earth tests, and battery and alarm checks.

For full perimeter protection, pair your fence with CCTV systems or alarm systems. Buying materials for your own crew? Browse energizers and accessories in our shop.

Frequently asked questions

How much does electric fence installation cost in Kenya?
Cost depends mainly on perimeter length, number of strands, energizer size and whether the fence is wall-top or free-standing. As an indicative 2026 guide, a wall-top fence on a typical residential plot often costs between KES 60,000 and 180,000 including materials and labour. Larger compounds are priced per metre. It depends on site, so confirm with a free site survey.
Can an electric fence kill a person?
A correctly installed security fence uses an energizer that sends short, controlled pulses rather than continuous current. The shock is painful and deters intruders, but a compliant energizer is designed not to cause lasting harm. Danger comes from illegal or modified energizers and poor installation, which is why we use proper equipment, earthing and warning signs.
Why is my electric fence not shocking?
The most common causes are a poor earth, vegetation touching the wires, a broken or loose wire, cracked insulators or a failing energizer. A low reading on the energizer usually points to a short or a weak earth. We test each zone, find the fault and repair it, including on fences installed by someone else.
Does an electric fence work during a power blackout?
Only if it has battery backup. Most quality energizers can run from a backup battery that charges while mains power is on and takes over during a power cut. Without a battery, the fence goes dead during an outage. We recommend battery backup for every installation, and solar charging is an option for remote sites.
How many strands should a wall-top electric fence have?
Most residential wall-top fences use four to six strands, while higher-risk properties may use eight or more. The right number depends on wall height, the gap between strands and how much deterrence you need. During the site survey we recommend a strand count that closes gaps without adding unnecessary cost.
Can an electric fence send alerts to my phone?
Yes. A GSM module connected to the energizer can send an SMS or call when the fence is cut, shorted or switched off, or when power fails. This is useful for homes left empty during the day and for businesses after hours. It needs an active SIM card with airtime.
How often should an electric fence be serviced?
Check the energizer reading weekly and clear vegetation as needed, especially in the rainy season when growth is fast. A professional service every few months is a good habit, covering voltage tests on each zone, tension, insulators, earth and battery. Busy or exposed sites may need more frequent checks.
Can you add an electric fence to a wall that already has razor wire?
Yes, in most cases. The electric fence brackets and wires are positioned with safe clearance from the razor wire so the two do not touch and short out. Together they provide a physical barrier and an active alarm. We assess the wall and existing wire during the survey before recommending a layout.
